DEPARTMENT AND PROGRAM HISTORY
The Department of Chemical Engineering (ChE), Faculty of Engineering, King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok (KMUTNB) was founded in 1983 under the fifth national higher education development plan of Thailand (1982-1986). The initial collaboration between KMUTNB and University of Applied Sciences Cologne, Germany under the support of European Union provided state-of-the-art teaching lab equipment, research instrumentations and learning classrooms. The ChE Department at KMUTNB is one of the first five chemical engineering schools in Thailand. Such great partnership between the educational institution and industries, along with a great location in the northern suburb of Bangkok, this makes the ChE Department at KMUTNB one of chemical engineering schools for high school students who want to pursue their higher education path to become successful chemical engineers.
The ChE Department at KMUTNB offers both undergraduate and postgraduate ChE programs. The four-year undergraduate programs include regular and international programs. Twenty-five percent of total courses are taught in English to promote (improve) their English communication skills while the international program offers only English-taught courses. The Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering (B.Eng. in ChE) is awarded after the finish of the program. Eligible students from both programs can join the collaborative project between the ChE Department at KMUTNB and the School of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science, University of Manchester, United Kingdom. The program offers dual degrees format which a two-year study at KUMUTB and the other two-year study at the University of Manchester.
Graduates from the ChE undergraduate programs can pursue their study in our post-grad programs. The Master of Engineering (M.Eng. in ChE) is offered as a two-year graduate program while Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D in ChE) is offered as a three-year graduate program. The graduate study emphasizes the enhancement of professional knowledge and interdisciplinary skills including research techniques and practical problem solving. Qualified students may elect to enroll directly toward the Ph.D. degree in the 4-year program.
Under the leadership of the ChE Department Head, Dr. Chaiwat Prapainainar, and the Undergraduate Program Chair, Dr. Phavanee Narataruksa, focus on the development of education, research, industrial collaboration, and social services in all dimensions to serve Thailand and the world for the disruption of technology and society. The ChE Department at KMUTNB’s commitments include not only to the technical skills, but also the attainment and demonstration of requisite competencies needed for the 21st century graduates.
All ChE staff of The Department of Chemical Engineering, KMUTNB intend to produce chemical engineering graduates with a solid knowledge and abilities to integrate theoretical knowledge to practical applications The department’s philosophy and missions published in the ChE Department webpage are as follows:
